A creative way with business

Janine Mayes - Janmary DesignsSetting up a business on the internet can turn a part-time hobby into a full-time job, as local businesswoman Janine Mayes has discovered.

After a career in banking that spanned 16 years and time out to raise her children, local woman Janine Mayes has changed tack again – this time, by setting up her own online business with the support of Invest Northern Ireland's Go for it programme.

A long-time fan of the internet, Lisburn mum-of-three Janine has always been creative.

"I've always used the internet to keep in touch with people, and, as a regular blogger, was already sharing my jewellery designs, digital images and designs because it was something I was interested in." said Janine.

"At first, friends and family started to request items. Then, after a while, I started getting orders from regular readers of my blog – some of which were located in places from France to America. As word spread and demand increased, I realised I could turn my creativity into a business."

Although a blogger for years, Janine's business kicked off officially in May last year with the launch of a new website, www.janmarydesigns.com which, with her blog, social networking and personal recommendations, has helped to boost sales.

Before launching her new venture, the Lisburn-based entrepreneur tapped the business start-up support offered through the Go for it programme, which provided advice and expertise on business planning, financial forecasts and marketing.

"From writing a business plan to book-keeping, the Go for it programme helped me with the essential tools I needed to get things up and running. It covers many aspects of running a business, some of which I hadn't initially considered."

"I received exactly the right help when I needed it most and it convinced me that there was a definite demand for what I was offering. It's always a big challenge and a certain leap of faith to start your own business, but once you have made the move, you're free to pursue it with confidence."

Janine said her new online presence has also helped to build her brand locally.

"Demand for bespoke jewellery pieces is definitely on the up, particularly among those planning weddings or formals. I also sell at craft fairs and now regularly host 'jewellery nights' for customers in their own homes. I have just got a booking for a hen night and I'm also doing a jewellery demonstration at a ladies' church group soon."

Going online also allows you more freedom – something Janine says she wasn't used to, particularly in the world of banking.

"I love the creativity, the flexibility and independence of running your own business. I can also fit it in around my family. The social aspect is important too – getting out and about and meeting customers face to face is a real pleasure.

"My life has completely changed. I'm so thrilled I made the move."
