Barking Mad
Many of us dream of setting up our own business, but few of us are brave enough to take the plunge. Not so for local woman Olivia Nelson, who, with support from Invest Northern Ireland's Go for it programme, has just turned her dream into reality and opened her own dog grooming salon, amusingly named "Barking Mad".
"Some people thought that I was a little crazy for even thinking about going out on my own, particularly in the current economic climate," said Olivia. "But like thousands of others from across the area, I'm passionate about dogs and their wellbeing and I'm confident I'll get their backing."
Former hotel receptionist Olivia officially opened 'Barking Mad' to rousing applause on October 18th after months of meticulous planning and learning.
"It has been stressful sometimes and I do feel like I'm taking on a big responsibility," admits Olivia. "But at the same time, I also feel strangely liberated by it all. I've done all my research. I've asked people what they want from my business and I'm raring to go."
Never one to miss an opportunity, Olivia was quick to seek help to get her new business off the ground and signed herself up for the practical advice and training available through the Go for it programme.
"The support provided through the Go for it programme was invaluable. Without it, I probably wouldn't have had the know-how and confidence to push ahead with my plans.
"From putting together my business plan, learning how to deal with tax and VAT to managing cash flow, my eyes were opened. I also met some wonderful, supportive people along the way. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who might be thinking of going out on their own."
With her business up and running, Olivia has her foot firmly on the pedal.
"The future is much brighter and I'm so proud of what I have achieved. I'm knuckling down, working hard and meeting new customers every day – and if you see some well-groomed dogs on show around Larne, you'll know where they've been!"
